About the Cast Hayes began his career in comedy performing improvisation and sketch writing at the Groundlings Theater in LA. Mentors include Mike McDonald (MadTV), Jen Joyce (MadTV), and Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers). Hayes currently teaches improv at New York's Improvolution with former Groundling, Holly Mandel. Hayes has appeared in thousands of hundreds of tens of commercials, many of which are now airing in the former Soviet Union. Hayes is also a standup comedian and performed regularly at the Hollywood Improv as well as World Famous Comedy Store. Hayes is excited to be working on Beyond the Pale, but doesn't want fans to confuse this project with his previous features: Beyond the Translucent and Past the Opaque. Hayes is fond of referring to himself in the 3rd person. Hayes Hargrove - “Sasha” Tara is a founding member of the improv troupe YFF and a member of Planet Ant Theatre’s Improv Colony. She has co-written and performed in several alternative productions on the Second City Detroit stage including, Chicalicious, Osama-Lama Ding Dong, Law and Disorder, Green Eggs and Hamtramck and No Way Jose…Canseco!. Other production credits include Pedro Orsini’s Parade of Penniless Players and But, However, If Only, Although at Planet Ant Theatre (Hamtramck, MI), Evil Twin and Uncoupled at the Improv Inferno (Ann Arbor, MI) and Playing Strangers at Donny’s Skybox Theatre (Chicago, IL). In 2004 she co-wrote and directed the comedic short films Shoebox and Stephen & Thomas D.D.S. Tara was recently nominated for a Wilde award for her performance in Small Packages, a play she co-wrote which debuted at Planet Ant Theatre last summer. Tara is an instructor for the Second City-Detroit training center and can also be seen improvising with Galleria, T-N-T, Ragtime and Boy Meets Girl. Tara Nida - “Anna” Tom Groenwald began studying acting under David Mamet and W.H. Macy at the St. Nicholas Theatre in Chicago. He later received his B.F.A. in acting at the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University. In 1997 he received his M.F.A. in acting from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Tom has worked at several theatres in Los Angeles and Chicago. The Chicago theatres include the St. Nicholas Theatre, Noble Fool, the Next Theatre and Greasy Joan. His television credits include "Lady Blue" with Danny Aiello and "Early Edition" in an episode opposite Ernest Borgnine. Tom's film credits include a co-starring role in "Almost Salinas" with John Mahoney and Virginia Madsen and "Angel on Abbey Street" with Dick Van Patten and Bruce Young. He was last seen in "Heavens Fall" with Timothy Hutton and David Straitharin and is currently working on "Stash" with Tim Kazurinsky being filmed in Chicago. Tom will appear in the film "Sacco and Vanzetti" later this year. Tom Groenwald - “Prof. Bullock” Diane Hill plays Professor Candace De Luna, and she actually IS a professor in real life. On the other hand, she teaches acting, so maybe that doesnt count. Maybe its not real life either. Diane has performed professionally on many stages across Michigan including the Fisher Theatre, the Purple Rose Theatre, Cherry County Playhouse, Performance Network, Croswell Opera House, and Detroits Gem Theatre. In February, shell play yet another English professor, this time as Professor Vivian Bearing in Breathe Arts production of the Pulitzer prize-winning, Wit. Favorite roles include Doris in Same Time, Next Year, Alma in Summer and Smoke, Rachel in Reckless, Mame in Mame and Agnes in both I Do, I Do! and Agnes of God. She has a Ph.D. in Theatre and a Music degree in Voice, and heads the acting program at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge. Diane also has a busy career in television, industrial film and voiceover, and you may even recognize her from her year-long stint as the fast-talking Funjet spokesperson every Saturday morning on channel 4 news Diane Hill - “Prof. DeLuna”
MARK BERNSTEIN started acting in school musicals some thirty-five years ago, and never got around to giving up the stage. Favorite roles include Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof", E.J. Hornbeck in "Inherit The Wind", Reverend Parris in "The Crucible", and Buddy Fidler in "City of Angels". "Beyond the Pale is his second film.
Mark Bernstein - “Prof. Fertig”
Carey is a graduate of the Theater School at DePaul University, formerly known as the Goodman School of Drama, in Chicago, Illinois. She has worked at many Chicago theaters, including Steppenwolf (with Laurie Metcalf), Court Theater, Northlight Theater, Apollo Theater and the American Theater Company. She has also lived and worked in New York City, most notably at the New York Stage and Film Festival with the Naked Angels theater company and Tony award winner Frank Wood. Carey appeared in the feature film "How Clarence Became Truly Normal", premiering this fall. She recently relocated to Los Angeles. Carey Peters - “Prof. Jaeger” Steve Elliott was raised by badgers in the majestic metropolis known as Monroe, Michigan. In the freakish years that followed, he performed in many theatrical productions in and around Ann Arbor. "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead", "Arms and the Man", "The Cave Dwellers" and "The Odd Couple" to name a few. In what some would call his "spare time", Steve enjoys writing and directing his own short films. His production company, Mind-Films Productions (http://www.mindfilmsproductions.com ), has produced such faux-mega-hit comedies as "Bill's Imaginary Tale", "Excused from Gym" and "Glamorous Prizes". Steve Elliott - “Prof. Kornblum” Michelle Mountain has been a Resident Artist at the Purple Rose Theatre Company since 1998; I act, teach, and direct there. Recent stage work includes Norma in Norma and Wanda at the Gem Theatre (and Purple Rose)written by Jeff Daniels, Amanda inThe Glass Menagerie, Elvira in Blithe Spirit, Ellie in Across the Way (also written by Jeff) - film credits include Lila in the upcoming Frozen Stupid, Bunny in Super Sucker, and a bunch of little projects. After earning degrees in English, Molecular Biology and Toxicology from the University of Michigan, Aphrodite Nikolovski set her sights on acting (her grandfather was legendary Macedonian actor Todor Nikolovski). Since then, she has built up an imposing list of professional credits onstage, in front of the camera and behind the scenes (even while holding down her day job as a scientist for U of M, The Karmanos Cancer Institute and the State of Michigan). As an actor, she has trained with Rich Goteri of the Detroit Ensemble Theater and The Second City-Detroit and has appeared in numerous films, commercials and theatrical productions. She received critical notices for her work in Devour the Snow at Meadowbrook Theater and The Metamorphosis at the Abreact Performance Space (Nomination Best Show, Between the Lines and Top Ten Shows of 2005, Detroit Free Press) and has pioneered roles in works by award-winning playwrights Joseph Zettelmaier and Jane Martin. She was recently nominated for a Wilde Award (Between the Lines, Best Supporting Actress, Drama) for her work in Joe Zettelmaier's Night Blooming at The Blackbird Theater. Aphrodite can be seen onstage in Frankenstein at Meadowbrook Theater and Amadeus at The Performance Network this season. Her recent film work includes: Crossover (Hoop), The Breakup (Universal), The Island (Dreamworks), Carbon Copy (Aphtic), A Rake Tenor (Detroit Experimental) and Story Time (Grand Valley Pictures). Aphrodite is SAG-eligible and is an AEA candidate.
Aphrodite Nikolovski - “Paige”
A recent graduate of the University of Michigan, John Hartman is now a full-time cast member of the Improv Inferno in Ann Arbor. He can be seen regularly in shows such as The X Show and the Damnation Game. John is a co-director and cast member of Citizen Improv and he is a co-creator and cast member of Uncoupled. He is a member of the improv groups Shark, Graveyard Smash, and various others. In addition, John has written and performed in the sketch comedy shows The Chrismahanakwanzaa Spectacular for the Improv Inferno and Delusion is Not Just a River in Egypt for the Planet Ant Theater. He is also a founding member of the sketch comedy duo Kapowski. John has studied improv with Dan Izzo at the Improv Inferno, at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City and at The Second City Training Center in Chicago.
John Hartman - “Jeff”
A senior at NYU’s Tisch School of Drama, Chris recently appeared in Fat Men in Skirts (Howard) and in The Castle (K) through Playwrights Horizons Theater School where he is currently a student. He has studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, and this summer he will be studying at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Screen-wise, Chris recently starred in Bubble Dourbon Studios’ Laceration Lane, directed by Kennon Hulett, and also just finished up two television pilots for PBS. Ann Arbor and Detroit are the home of Chris’s comedy roots, where he opened for comedians such as Dave Coulier and Comedy Central’s J. Chris Newberg. He is currently starring in Proof by Disproof, a play that he recently wrote, which will be opening in New York City this July through Small Pond Entertainment. Chris Beier - “Chris”
Hailing from Dearborn, Michigan, Rob Sulaver (Kyle) is not a recent graduate from the University of Michigan. He will return to Ann Arbor next year to finish his double major and compete for his 5th year of eligibility as a wrestling wolverine. You may recognize Rob as the dangerously manipulative speed-addict named Harlow from “Stockholm Wisconsin” or the callow yet defiant son Carl from Patrick Marber’s “Dealer’s Choice”. Rob is thrilled about playing the rowdy, raucous, roommate Kyle in "Beyond the Pale" as well as being a part of this terrifically talented team. Rob likes alliteration. Rob Sulaver - “Kyle”
 
Originally from Grand Ledge, Michigan, Dave has a degree in theatre performance from the University of Michigan department of theatre and Drama. His credits while at the university include leading roles in: The Glory of Living, A Flea in Her Ear, 1918, Hot L Baltimore, and Romeo & Juliet among others. David Abed will continue to follow his dreams and his pursuit of acting... and he is one bad-ass mofo. Dave Abed - “Eric” Rob Hess attended the prestigious DePaul University Theatre School (formerly Goodman School of Drama). He's written and directed numerous short films but is currently pimping his recently completed second feature, How Clarence Became Truly Normal. He is very excited to be in the cast of Beyond The Pale and is awaiting a butler for his trailer Rob Hess - “Ronnie the Hot Dog Guy” A graduate of the University of Michigan, Kathryn received her BFA in Theatre Performance and her BA in English Language and Literature, and has been acting since she was wee. Her credits include Uncoupled (Ensemble), Stop Kiss (Sara), The Diary of a Scoundrel (Manefa), An Arthur Miller Celebration (Beatrice), A Streetcar Named Desire (Eunice), The Laramie Project (Catherine/Romaine), and a number of other plays and short films. She is a conservatory student in the training center at The Second City. Kathryn can currently be seen performing with a variety of improv groups and in shows at the Improv Inferno in Ann Arbor, including Citizen Improv, The Damnation Game, and Cliff Notes. Kathryn Thomas - “Misty” Linda Lee Austin performed in many musicals in college as well as some roles in comedy and drama. She also was a part of a 10 week USO sponsored tour of 4 Asian countries, in the performance of "Destry Rides Again".
